Nikkei Jumps as Trump Hails `Big Progress` in Japan Trade Talks

(MT Newswires) - Japanese shares ended higher on Thursday after Trump called trade talks with Japan "big progress," though Tokyo signaled tough negotiations ahead.
The Nikkei 225 rose 1.35%, or 457.20 points, to end at 34,377.60.
President Donald Trump said there was "big progress" in tariff talks with Japan, joining what Tokyo expected to be a low-level meeting.
He met economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa and later US officials, expanding the agenda to include troop hosting costs. Both sides agreed to meet again this month.
Akazawa said currency issues were not discussed. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba warned talks would be tough and ruled out major concessions.
On the economic front, Japan's export growth slowed to 3.9% in March, down from 11.4% in February, reaching 9.85 trillion yen.
The trade surplus widened to 544.05 billion yen, as imports rose 2% to 9.30 trillion yen, data from the Ministry of Finance showed. Exports to China fell 4.8%, while imports jumped 15.9%.Shipments to the US rose 2.2%, with imports down 6.8%.
In corporate news, Baudroieposted a 55% rise in attributable profit to 1.80 billion yen for the year ended February. Diluted EPS rose to 112.55 yen, and revenue jumped 59% to 11.65 billion yen.
Komedawill pay a 27 yen year-end dividend for the year ended Feb. 28, bringing the total to 54 yen. The 1.23 billion yen payout is due May 15. Its return ratio reached 59.4%, topping its 50% goal.
Hondawill move hybrid Civic production from Saitama to Indiana by mid-2024, citing US auto tariffs, Bloomberg reported. The carmaker faces exposure from importing 160,000 vehicles a year from Mexico
