Nikkei stock index rises over 2% after Wall Street gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Nikkei stock index briefly rose over 2 percent early Monday, tracking gains on Wall Street late last week.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 626.65 points, or 1.87 percent, from Friday to 34,212.23. The broader Topix index was up 41.66 points, or 1.69 percent, at 2,508.57.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by pharmaceutical, bank, and nonferrous metal issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 143.69-70 yen compared with 143.48-58 yen in New York and 142.83-85 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Friday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1341-1345 and 162.96-163.03 yen against $1.1357-1367 and 162.95-163.05 yen in New York and $1.1363-1365 and 162.30-34 yen in Tokyo late Friday afternoon.
