Hang Seng Index opens higher as technology shares lead gains

23rd January 2025 - (Hong Kong) The Hang Seng Index commenced trading on a positive note, rising by 102 points or 0.52% to reach 19,881 points. Similarly, the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index opened up by 43 points, reflecting a 0.61% increase, bringing it to 7,221 points. The Technology Index also registered gains, climbing 33 points or 0.74% to settle at 4,615 points.
In the technology sector, shares exhibited mixed performance. Alibaba saw a notable increase of 2.01%, while Xiaomi Group and Meituan rose by 1.13% and 0.79%, respectively. JD.com also experienced modest gains, advancing by 0.73%, and Kuaishou added 0.25%. Conversely, Tencent experienced a slight decline, falling by 0.1%.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ( SMIC ) was among the standout performers, increasing by 2.14%.
In the financial sector, HSBC Holdings faced a dip of 0.44%, while AIA Group and China Ping An recorded gains of 0.27% and 1.3%, respectively. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange rose by 1.03%, contributing to the overall positive sentiment in the market.
