Hang Seng Index opens higher by over 100 points before reversing

27th August 2026 - (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong stock market started the day on a strong note, with the Hang Seng Index opening up by 121 points at 25,774 and an initial turnover of HK$7.29 billion. The Hang Seng Tech Index also advanced by 0.8 per cent to reach 4,665. Notable post-earnings gains were recorded by MINIMAX, whose shares rose nearly 5 per cent, and Zhipu, which jumped over 8 per cent.
As the session progressed, the market reversed direction, with the Hang Seng Index dropping 56 points, or 0.22 per cent, to trade at 25,596. The China Enterprises Index fell by 23 points, or 0.27 per cent, settling at 8,510, while the Tech Index remained almost unchanged, up just two points at 4,628. Total market turnover reached HK$32.7 billion during the period.
Technology shares displayed a mixed performance. Tencent Holdings rose by 0.8 per cent, while Alibaba declined by 0.6 per cent. Meituan gave up 0.6 per cent, Xiaomi Group shed 1.4 per cent, and JD.com slipped 0.9 per cent. In contrast, Kuaishou managed a 0.7 per cent gain.
Financial shares were also varied. HSBC Holdings was unchanged, AIA Group saw a modest rise of 0.3 per cent, China Ping An slipped 1 per cent, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing fell 0.5 per cent. At the same time, Sunny Optical Technology climbed 4 per cent after half-year results, hitting HK$65.75, buoyed by a ten per cent increase in net profit despite a drop in gross margin for smartphone products to 12.3 per cent.
