Hang Seng Index opens lower as tech shares lead decline

4th March 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened weaker on Wednesday, with the Hang Seng Index falling 298 points, or 1.15 per cent, to 25,469 in early trading. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 91 points, or 1.06 per cent, to 8,516, while the Hang Seng Tech Index declined 60 points, or 1.23 per cent, to 4,816.
Large-cap technology stocks were broadly lower. Tencent Holdings slipped 0.8 per cent, Alibaba Group fell 2.6 per cent, Meituan eased 1.3 per cent, Xiaomi Corporation edged down 0.3 per cent, JD.com lost 1.1 per cent and Kuaishou retreated 1.3 per cent.
Financial shares also came under pressure. HSBC Holdings dropped 2 per cent and insurer AIA Group declined 1.2 per cent. Ping An Insurance was unchanged, while Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing fell 0.3 per cent.
