Tokyo stocks open higher after Wall Street gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday, tracking overnight advances on Wall Street, as concern eased over U.S. tariff policy after President Donald Trump indicated some countries could be excluded from his proposed reciprocal duties.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 421.50 points, or 1.12 percent, from Monday to 38,029.99. The broader Topix index was up 18.47 points, or 0.66 percent, at 2,809.35.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by nonferrous metal, transportation equipment, and precision instrument issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 150.77-82 yen compared with 150.64-74 yen in New York and 149.63-65 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0801-0804 and 162.85-95 yen against $1.0796-0806 and 162.77-87 yen in New York and $1.0839-0840 and 162.19-23 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
