Tokyo stocks open higher as tech issues track Wall St. gains

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday, lifted by heavyweight semiconductor-related shares after gains by their U.S. counterparts overnight.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 274.76 points, or 0.71 percent, from Wednesday to 39,106.24. The broader Topix index was up 18.45 points, or 0.67 percent, at 2,763.86.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by securities house, marine transportation and land transportation issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 152.64-65 yen compared with 152.54-64 yen in New York and 153.33-35 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.0399-0400 and 158.73-76 yen against $1.0398-0408 and 158.71-81 yen in New York and $1.0402-0403 and 159.50-54 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
