Hang Seng Index rises as JD.com surges, Alibaba softens post-earnings

18th November 2024 - (Hong Kong) The Hang Seng Index opened positively today, rising by 169 points or 0.87% to reach 19,595, temporarily halting a six-day decline. The National Enterprises Index also saw gains, up 64 points or 0.92% at 7,044, while the Technology Index increased by 51 points or 1.18%, settling at 4,379.
In the technology sector, stocks displayed mixed results. Alibaba fell 0.4% following its earnings report, while Tencent gained 1% and Meituan rose 0.8%. Notably, JD.com experienced a significant surge, climbing 4%, and Xiaomi saw a pre-earnings increase of 1.7%, with Kuaishou rising 0.5%.
Financial stocks performed well, with HSBC Holdings up 1.6%, AIA Insurance rising 1.4%, Ping An Insurance gaining 2.4%, and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange increasing by 1.4%. This uptick in the market reflects a cautious optimism among investors amidst varying performances across sectors.
