The Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.3% to around 53,480 on Friday, extending gains for a fourth consecutive session, while the broader Topix Index advanced 0.5% to 3,563.
The rally was led by major companies ahead of their earnings reports.
Data storage firm Kioxia Holdings surged 8.7% to a fresh record high ahead of its Feb. 12 earnings release.
SoftBank Group and Sumitomo Metal Mining also gained 4.3% and 2.1%, respectively, as investors anticipated strong results.
Meanwhile, Hitachi jumped 3.7% and Fujitsu rose 5.8% on the back of upbeat earnings reports.
On the economic front, Japan's retail sales unexpectedly fell in December, though industrial production declined less than estimated, signaling mixed momentum in the domestic economy.
Over the month, the Nikkei 225 Index is poised to gain more than 6%, while the Topix Index is set for an increase of roughly 5%, reflecting steady investor confidence in the middle of the earnings season.
