20th December 2024 - (Hong Kong) The Hang Seng Index opened lower, dropping 55 points to 19,697, but later recovered to show a gain of 34 points or 0.17%, reaching 19,786. The National Enterprises Index rose by 12 points, or 0.16%, to 7,164, while the Technology Index increased by 13 points, or 0.29%, to 4,452. Overall, trading on the main board amounted to HK$22.4 billion.
In the technology sector, stocks showed varied performance. Tencent led the gains with a rise of 2.1%, while Alibaba faced a decline of 2.3%. Meituan and Xiaomi experienced slight increases of 0.1% and 0.6%, respectively. Conversely, JD.com fell by 0.9%, and Kuaishou decreased by 1.8%.
Financial stocks remained stable, with HSBC Holdings up 0.7%, AIA rising by 0.5%, China Ping An increasing by 0.3%, and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing gaining 0.2%.
Chip stocks attracted significant interest, with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ( SMIC ) surging by 4.5%. Shanghai Huahong Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation also saw a rise of 2.4%, while HG Semiconductor increased by 3.4%.
