Hang Seng opens higher following U.S.‑Iran tensions

20th April 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities edged higher at the open on Monday as investors monitored developments in the situation between the United States and Iran. The Hang Seng Index rose 44 points, or 0.16 per cent, to 26,204. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 11 points, up 0.12 per cent at 8,856, while the Hang Seng Tech Index advanced 16 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 5,059.
Technology heavyweights delivered a mixed performance in early trading. Tencent slipped 0.2 per cent, Alibaba fell 0.5 per cent and Meituan declined 0.7 per cent. In contrast, Xiaomi edged up 0.1 per cent, JD.com climbed 0.5 per cent and Kuaishou added 0.4 per cent.
Financial stocks were similarly divided. HSBC rose 0.7 per cent and AIA Group gained 0.1 per cent, while Ping An Insurance retreated 0.3 per cent. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing posted a 0.3 per cent increase.
